Cacti are more than just botanical treasures. It is a means of survival and a source of food for millions of people. These flat-stemmed prickly cacti belong to the Opuntia genus in the Cactaceae family. They are native to the Western Hemisphere. Their fruits are edible. The plant itself is widely cultivated.
The best-known variety is the Indian fig (O. ficus-indica ). This is important in tropical and subtropical regions. People depend on it to make a living. The plant grows in the form of a bush or a tree. It can reach a height of 5.5 meters (18 feet). Large yellow flowers bloom. The width is 7.5-10 cm (3-4 inches).
Flowers become fruits. Colors vary from white to yellow to red-purple. Farmers collect fruit. We also harvest edible pads. This plant is used as fodder. This is the key to survival.
The seeds are hard. they produce oil. This adds value beyond fresh consumption. The stems contain a lot of water. This is very important during a drought. Barbless varieties are preferred for feed. When water is scarce, animals eat it.

This versatility is what makes cacti so special. It’s not just a cactus. This is infrastructure.
Why Cactus Pear is conquering new territory
You look at big, showy flowers and think, “This would look great in my garden.” That’s a valid point. Some types of cacti are only grown as ornamentals for their impressive flowers. It is also very easy to apply. Take part of the stem, plant it, and a new cactus is ready.
However, the ease of growth is a double-edged sword.
The two most famous species, the Engelmann cactus (Opuntia engelmannii ) and the beavertail cactus (Opuntia basilaris ), are staples of the Southwestern United States landscape. Fits perfectly. they are strong, they belong there.
Nature keeps them in check in their habitat. Predator. Parasite. competition. A delicate and tingling balance.
Cactus moth solution
The equation changes when you move outside the original range.
When early explorers brought cacti to Australia and South Africa, they did not bring with them natural enemies to keep cactus populations in check. Cacti land on new soil without biological brakes. they were successful. They spread. Over time, they become invasive pests.
This is not a hypothetical scenario. This is a recorded ecological event. Cacti cover native plants. They smothered the native plants. These are problems that require specific problem solving.
Biological control mechanism
So how can you prevent cacti from growing from a single stem segment and thriving in harsh conditions?
No herbicides are used. It doesn’t burn everything.
Introduce specific predators. In the case of Australia and parts of southern Africa, the solution is moths of the genus Cactoblastis. These moths lay their eggs on the pear pads of cacti. The larvae hatch and eat the inside of the cactus.
This is not total destruction. This is targeted biological control. Moths prevent invasive species from taking over entire ecosystems.
Is your garden safe?
If you grow Engelmann or Beavertail cacti in the Southwestern United States, it probably won’t affect you. They are part of the local ecology.
However, if you live outside that area, ask questions before planting. Check if the species is listed as invasive in your area. The ease with which they spread means that a neglected plant can turn into a noxious nuisance within a few years.
Beauty is easy to find. Controlling invasiveness is more difficult.
Which cactus belongs where? This is a real question. The answer often lies in understanding what is holding them back elsewhere. If you don’t make these checks, all you’ll be left with is a ticking clock.
