Chew hard. You might break a tooth. Not today.
Hershey dropped something new. Quietly. Just like that. Reese’s Pieces got a makeover. The first one in a decade, by the way. No fanfare, no parade, just candy bags hitting shelves July 17. The date? July 8 was the announcement. But the goods arrive later.
I got my hands on a bag early. Sneaked some office tests. Results follow.
What exactly are these?
Chocolate cookie. That’s the flavor profile. Or, more accurately, texture profile. Canada had this exclusivity for years. Americans wanted it. They whined online. Hershey heard them, maybe.
It landed stateside in 2024. Only if you went to Times Square. Or Hershey’s website. Or bought a plane ticket. Now, it’s everywhere. Any corner store will do. No travel required.
The idea is simple. Take that classic peanut butter. Make it slightly salty. Creamy. Slap it over a crunchy cookie center. Cookie center? Think crisp ball. Chocolaty. Crispy. Not tough. That was my fear with previous peanut candies. Chewing battles are for soldiers. I prefer snacking.
The press release calls it a “crispy, chocolaty cookie ball.” I call it edible crunch that doesn’t hurt my molars.
Why does it work? Texture contrast. Humans like snap. We like softness too. Put them together and magic happens.
My office director of groceries, Mara Weinraub, hates nothing. She loves food. She ate these things. Then she came back to my desk. Again. And again.
She stole the bag. Took it home for a movie. Toy Story 5 needs crunch, apparently. She said this new flavor beats the original Reese’s Pieces. The OGs? Blown out. Hard.
Is it just hype?
Probably. But I ate the hype too. And I liked it.
Peanut butter and chocolate always work. Who knew? They make Tuesday afternoons bearable. Or movie nights. Any time, really. The balance isn’t just okay. It’s loud. Good loud.
So yes, I will buy more. When they drop on the 17th, I’ll be there. Maybe not with a run, but with intent. Stocking up feels necessary now.
Did they ruin it for everyone else? Maybe. But the bag was empty before lunch ended.
What will they do next? Mint? Bacon? Wait and see. I won’t. I’m watching the aisles.
